John was not found in the 1850 or 1860 Federal census, be he served in the Civil War as a private in Company D of the 16th Texas Infantry of the Confederate States of America. Originally Flournoy's 7th Regiment of Texas Infantry, this unit became companies D and E of Granbury's Consolidated Texas Brigade around the 9th of April in 1865

The Colorado County Citizen writes January 21, 1886:

It becomes our painful duty this week to record the death of one of o9ur most worthy and highly respected citizens. Mr. Daniel Webster Stockbridge passed quietly away at his residence in Eagle Lake, about 4 o'clock, Friday evening, January 15th in the fifty-sixth year of his age surrounded by his family and friends, and was rational until the last.

Mr. Stockbridge was born in Pittston, Lucerne County, Pennsylvania, on the 11th day of May, 1830. When he was a small boy he moved to California, and thence to Texas, where he lived for over forty years. Daniel Stockbridge settled in Eagle Lake at the completion of the War Between the States, approximately 1866, and has resided here until his death. His remains were interred last Saturday in the family burial groun at the Lakeside Cemetery located on the border of the lake and followed to the grave by a large concourse of friends. Daniel leaves a widow and six children to mourn the loss of a protector.

Namesake: It is always interesting to try and figure out where someone gets their middle name. For many women, it is their Mother's maiden name. For men, it can be one of their brother's name. For James UNDERWOOD Frazar, there is a different reason.

James's Mother, Susanne, (or Susanna, Susane, or Susan) was the daughter of John and Martha Cobb. However, John Cobb died early in her childhood and Martha remarried a Lt. Colonel Lancelot Underwood in 1837. The Colonel was like a Father all of Susanne's life and when James was born, he received Susanne's step-father's last name as the middle name.

The marriage of Mr. Gus Wagner and Miss Valentine "Vallie" Stockbridge will take place on December sixth. A dainty little home is receiving the finishing touches to be occupied immediately after the wedding. Mr. Wagner is a good, sober, industrious business man, standing well with all who know him.

Miss "Vallie" was born here. She comes of one of the oldest Eagle Lake families. Her father, Daniel W. Stockbridge, was one of the original settlers of the town; and her mother was born near here. D. W. Stockbridge at one time owned a cotton gin in partnersship with Captain Dunovant situated in the heart of the town. He was a merchant here when he, Joe Schiller, Jack Newsom and J. W. McCarty carried on all the traqde of the town and surrounding county.
