He married (2) MARY WILHELMINA COOK Abt. 1855. She was born Abt. 1787 in Oldenburg, Germany.Notes for JOHANN GERHARD STRUSS:
Johann Gerhard Struss, from Oldenburg, Germany, was among the original members of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Frelsburg, Texas. On June 5, 1855, Reverend Roehm was successful in organizing the first congregation which were made up of many of Johann Struss's very close friends and neighbors. There were twenty-three families that made up the first congregation: Johann Gerhard Struss, Johann Gerhard Fehrencamp, Ludwig Kaiser, Reinhardt Stoeltje, Johann Krause, Heinrich Voskamp, George Kaiser, Friedrich Frerichs, Gerhard Mehrens, H. Hillman, L. Hillman, Gottlieb Volmar, John Koepke, Christian Aschenbeck, C. Lenka, Johann Schulze, Theodore August Becker, Wilhelm Frerichs, Johann F. Stolle, J. Guthmann, H. Schmiedekamp, F. Hillmer, and John Kaiser.
A "make-do" building in the town of Frelsburg, Texas was used at first as the meeting place for services. Frelsburg became over the next five years the meeting place for social work in and around the area. Captain Wilhelm Frels had a hotel where visitors would stay when they were in the area. In 1860, the new church was dedicated and cost the congregation $1,389.25.
In 1856, Reverend Roehm continued to preach the word of God, as well as organized social functions for the surrounding area. It was during one of these social functions that Johann Gerhard met Mary Wilhelmine Cook from Ross Prairie. The courtship began and was a relatively short one. Johann Struss and Mary Cook were united in marriage and Mary became the step-mother to Johann Diedrich and Charles Diedrich.
The marriage certificate so reads that to any regular ordained Minister of the Gospel, Judge of the District Court, Chief Justice of said County or any acting Justice of the Peace in and for said county --- Greeting! You are hereby authorized to solemnize the rites of Matrimony between Johann Gerhard Struss and Mary Wilhelmine Cook, both of this county, and due return make of these written 60 days from this date as the law dictates. Given under my hand and official seal this April 1, 1856. Duly married on the 8th of April, 1856 by Reverend Conrad Roehm, Minister of the Gospel.
Three years later on the 10th day of August, 1859, while attending church services, Johann Gerhard had a heart attack. Even though he survived, he was weak and taken to the hotel owned by Captain Wilhelm Frels. Doctor Friederich Becker was the attending physician. Johann gathered his family and close friends and dictated his last will and testament to Doctor Becker. It would only be a few days later than Johann Gerhard Struss would eventually die from the stroke he had a week earlier.
During the October Term in 1859 of Colorado County, the probate of Johann Gerhard Struss was done. It says, "we the undersigned, Fr. Frerichs and William Ocker, appointed by said court at its September Term in 1859 commissions to inventory and appraise the property belonging to the estate of John G. Struss deceased, return the following as an inventory and appraisement of the property belonging to the said estate ---

Notes for MARY WILHELMINA COOK:
Mary Wilhelmine Cook Struss, the second wife of Johann Gerhard Struss and stepmother of John and Carl, moved to Fayettville after the passing of John in August of 1859. Johann Diedrich Struss had just gotten married and was expecting Wilhelm Struss in December at the time of his father's passing.
Because John was already married, Mary Cook Struss, the stepmother, elected to take Carl with her and move in with her lifelong friends, Eilert and Wilhelmine (WC) Damken. The Damkens were both 60 years old and Mary was 63 at the time when she and Carl moved in with them. The Damken family was not considered well-to-do, but did have a net worth at the time they invited Mary to move in with them equal to about $250 in real estate and $800 in peresonal worth.
Charles (Carl) was 17 years old at the time of his father's passing. He did not really agree with his stepmother's move to Fayettville and decided to stay with the Friedrich Frerichs family for a while until he could decide what to do with his life. He acted as a servant in the household of the Frerichs. He stayed here for about a year and then moved in with the Johann Stolle family and acted as a servant there for about a year before his enlisting into the Civil War in 1861.
Johann Diedrich and Charles Diedrich Struss did not wait very long to dispose of the farm that their father worked so hard at building for ten years. Only two and a half months had passed since the death of their father when Johann and Carl sold their interest in the homestead to August Beyer and John Koepke.

8. WILHELM WM.5 STRUSS, SR.
(JOHANN DIEDERICH CHRISTIAN4, JOHANN GERHARD3, GESCHE MARGARETE2 SOMMER, GESCHE1 JOOST) was born December 15, 1859 in Fayettville, Texas, and died August 12, 1953 in Columbus, Texas. He married JULIA LILIE January 11, 1884 in New Ulm, Texas, daughter of FRIEDERICH LILIE and FRIEDERICKE MALSCH. She was born December 05, 1864 in Brushy Community, Near Columbus, Texas, and died November 19, 1937 in Columbus, Texas.Notes for WILHELM WM. STRUSS, SR.:
Wilhelm "Gerhard" Struss was the center focus of attention in why the initiative began to do the STRUSS Family Heritage. He never did speak of his family or where he came from to his sons or daughters and it was speculated that he must have been an illigitimate child. The author of these writings setforth to find out who his parents were and some dealings of his life history.
Johann Diedrich Struss, son of Johann Gerhard Struss, married a woman, only known as Mary, from between Fayetteville and Frelsburg, Texas. His marriage was near the beginning of the year 1859. Johann and Mary saw the birth of their first son, Wilhelm "Gerhard" Struss on December 15, 1859. Wm. Struss never knew his birthday, but the Census of 1860 saw that in June 1860, Wm. Struss was shown to be 6/12 months of age. His cemetery marker reflects a date of June 1859, but the courthouse records have shown a corrected date.
Within a year after Wilhelm was born, John was discussing the hostility between the North and the South with Paul Machemehl of Bellville, Texas. Many Germans did not believe this was their fight and many joined Paul Machemehl and rode south to Mexico to sit out the war before returning. John and his brother disagreed with Paul, but asked if Mary and little Wm. Struss and his mother could stay with his family until he returned from the hostilities. Johann Diedrich Struss never did return from the war. During Wm. Struss's first ten years, he would be reared by the Machemehl family.
On Paul Machemehl's return from Mexico, it was around 1868 that Paul began his courtship with Hermina Brune in Colorado, County Texas. Because John never returned from the civil war, Paul felt somewhat responsible as John was a dear friend and he was left looking after his son. He would take Wm. with him while he courted Hermina Brune. A very good one room school existed near the Brunes. Lewis and Fredericka Brune discussed with Florenz Brune the likelihood of Wilhelm Struss remaining with the family since his father never returned and he needed to go to school.
Lewis and Fredericka Brune agreed with both Paul Machemehl and Mary Struss that Mary and Wm. could move in with their family and Wilhelm could go to school with Amile Brune, Lewis Brune's youngest son. Mary Struss would work around the the Brune homeplace and help with the household chores. It would be here that Wm Struss would gain an education and grow up during his teenage years.
Lewis Brune, along with his oldest son, Florenz, produced cotton and grain, as well as raised many head of cattle. When Wilhelm was not attending the Zimmerscheidt School, he was helping Lewis and Florenz Brune on the outdoors. It was when Wm. was only 12 years old that he got very interested in carpentry and the building of things.
Wm met Julia (Julie) Lilie in about 1880. Or, that is when she really caught his eye. The courtship would last for about four years because Julie Lilie's parents did not want her getting married too young. She was about 5 years younger than Wm. It was on January 11, 1884 that Julie and Wm. were married. Wm. and Julie would stay on at the Florenz Brune place for a few months before moving to the Colorado River bottom in Shaws Bend. In a few years, after the birth of their first two children, Louie and Annie, Florenz Brune would sell to Wm and Julie a piece of land for about $2,000 that they would move to and live until all of their children were married and rearing families of their own.
In an interview with Willie Tietschert of Shaw's Bend on his 81st birthday, much light was shed on pieces to the puzzle that were necessary to resolve the who and where of Wilhelm Struss. Willie said that Wilhelm was reared on the Florenz Brune place in Shaw's Bend, a small area occupied by a community of German immigrants. Florenz Brune sold a piece of land across from Willie Tietschert's home to Wilhelm for about $2,000. Wilhelm and Julie Lilie moved up from the Colorado River Bottom and raised their family. Before moving to the new place, Wilhelm and Julie Lilie had their first two children, Louie and Annie.
Wilhelm Struss was a hard worker and was an excellent carpenter. He would leave for days and build homes in New Gulf, East Bernard, Eagle Lake, Weimar, Columbus, and other cities, whereever work would call. Julia (Julie) Lilie would take care of the children and do all the farm work raising cotton, corn, potatoes, cattle, horses and pigs.
All of the children born to Wm and Julie Lilie, boy and girl, would see no families having any boys to keep the STRUSS name alive, except Alwin Joseph Struss who had one child, Elmer Alvin Struss. Wm Struss was able to grin about the STRUSS name carrying on two more times in his lifetime. After a stroke during the first part of August 1953, Wilhelm laid in bed weakening each passing day. On August 10, 1953 he was informed that another STRUSS boy was born, his name was Warren William Struss. The news reached Wm Struss in the hospital and he was strong enough to give a big grin when he was informed of the birth of another Struss boy!
Wilhelm Struss died at 2:15 a.m. on August 12th in the Columbus, Texas hospital at the age of 94 years. He was laid to rest in the Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Columbus. Reverend G. Wolf of St. Paul's Lutheran Church officiated in the services. Untermeyer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Willie Tietschert, Herman Brune, Lee Hastedt, Albert Brune, Herman Barten, and Louis Voskamp.
After all the children were married, Wm. and Julie Lilie moved to Columbus, Texas where they both lived the remainder of their lives

10. ALWIN JOSEPH6 STRUSS
(WILHELM WM.5, JOHANN DIEDERICH CHRISTIAN4, JOHANN GERHARD3, GESCHE MARGARETE2 SOMMER, GESCHE1 JOOST) was born October 25, 1897 in Shaws Bend, Texas, and died June 18, 1966 in Eagle Lake, Texas. He married MATHILDE WILHEMINA WALLING July 01, 1920 in Bernardo, Texas Home of Mathilde's Parents, daughter of JOHANN WALLING and JOHANNA OSTHOFF. She was born February 12, 1894 in Balltown, Iowa, and died November 29, 1982 in Eagle Lake, Texas.Notes for ALWIN JOSEPH STRUSS:
Alwin Joseph Struss was the first child born in Wilhelm Struss's new home located along Shaw's Bend Road off Highway 71 north of Columbus, Texas. Wilhelm and Julia moved there after four long months of construction on the home. Much of the work and help was contributed by Louie, Wilhelm's second child. Annie, Louie, and William Albert were born along the river, a few miles toward Columbus from Shaw's Bend. The house still stands today.
The land the home was built on was some land that Florenz Brune sold to Wilhelm Struss around 1895. All of Wilhelm's and Julia's children were independent when it came to likes and dislikes. A.J. as Alwin Joseph was called through life, was no different. He would play in the field and get excited over the "horseless carriages" that toured up and down the old Shaw's Bend Road. He never did lose his appeal for the automobile, so proved by his first opening an auto repair business in Garwood, Texas about 1920 and then later moving to Eagle Lake, Texas and establishing A.J. Struss Auto Supply, a business that is still running today by his son, Elmer Alvin Struss.
A.J. also loved to play musical instruments. When he was young, he took a fancy to music. He could play almost any instrument by ear. He use to play in the old dance bands from 1910 to 1918 on an old platform in Shaw's Bend where dances were held every Saturday night. The community, as it was back then, a blacksmith shop, dancehall, general store, and Lutheran Church.
Judge J.J. "Jake" Mansfield of whom the Mansfield Dam at Lake Travis was named after, in or about 1915, enjoyed A.J.'s playing so much one Saturday night, he flipped him a new Silver Dollar and said that his playing was some of the best he had ever heard!
Alwin Joseph died in his home in Eagle Lake, Texas from a stroke on June 18, 1966. Funeral services were held two days later, June 20, 1966, in the Presbyterian Church. Reverend E. E. Mulliner officiated and the burial was in the Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake, Texas. At the time of his death, A.J. was survived by his wife, Mathilde Walling Struss, a son, Elmer Alvin Struss, 3 grandsons, Darrell Alvin, Sidney Elmer, and Warren William Struss. He was also survived by one brother, Walter Struss of San Antonio.

Notes for MATHILDE WILHEMINA WALLING:
In her own words, Mathilde 'Tillie' Walling wrote in the late 60's: As far back as I can remember when I was very young and small we went to church in the two-seated hack. There was a new drainage ditch that we had to cross, and I almost fell out of the hack. This scared me so much that a few weeks later when we were going to the Christmas Eve program at the church at night (the only time we went away from home at night), I sat on the back steps when on my knees and my chin in my hands, I said for them to go and I would be right there when they got back. But they put me in the hack anyway. We all got a surprise package under the tree. Mine was a little china pitcher with roses. I guess that is why I have a pitcher collection now. Rose and Fred alway tried to teach me to whistle. I must have been about twelve years old before I could make a real sound. Every Sunday I was so excited when we could go to Sunday School. Even though I was real small, I always asked Mamma what I was going to wear. Of course, I only had one Sunday dress. But one Sunday Mamma wasn't feeling well, I guess, and when I asked the same question, she said to go and put on my velvet dress. The dress was not really velvet. I ran and told Lizzie to get my velvet dress down, and they all laughed at me.
Big days for me when Papa coming home from town with a box of apples, crackers, or prunes and maybe a piece of chewing gum for each of us. I even liked the keg of salted herring in the winter. We ate them for breakfast.
I remember going to Mr. Spoerl's house with a little bucket of milk in the morning. There would be a nickel in the empty bucket for the milk and also a piece of candy for me.
I'll never forget the pretty lady on the big white horse which I got to see in a parade before the big circus. And, I'll always remember crying a week, I think, when Grandma and the Aunts sent everyone in the family a gift with Papa following his visit to Iowa except me. It was just an oversight. Then there was the Christmas we all got a stuffed toy under the tree. Mine was a dog, but by Christmas morning a mouse had eaten a hole in it and pulled out some of the cotton. I cried and cried -- so a few days after Christmas, there was a new dog for me under the tree.
When Fred was about nine and I about eleven, Papa was sick, so Fred and I were told to kill the hen for dinner. I held the legs and put the hen's neck on the log. Fred raised the axe and we both shut our eyes. When the axe fell, I turned loose. We opened our eyes and there ran the hen with just her bill chopped off.
This writing was given to Mrs. W.A. Hefner during 1965 while she was compiling a Walling Family History.
Tillie Walling was an inspiration to Sidney E. Struss, author of this overall family history in the early 1970's as he compiled the first edition of the Struss Family Heritage. The first book can be found in the Eagle Lake and Columbus, Texas libraries.
Final rites for Mathilde Wilhelmina "Tillie" Walling Struss were held Monday, November 29, 1982:
Citizens in the area were deeply saddened this week upon the death of Mrs. A.J. Tillie Struss, a long-time resident of this community. Mrs. Struss closed her eyes to a peaceful rest at the age of 88 in the Eagle Lake Community Hospital on Sunday, November 28, 1982 at 1:35 am. She had been in failing health for some time.
The Reverend Mike Barron, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Eagle Lake of which she was a lifetime member, officiated at the services which were held Monday afternoon, November 29th at 2 pm from the chapel of Mill-Bauer Funeral Home. Interment followed in the Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake, Texas.
Mrs. Laurina Matthews provided favorite hymns on the organ during the touching services. Names as pallbearers were Robert Samuel Martin, Herbert Glick, Isidore Ramirez, M.G. Lanier, William Brunner, Sr. and Raymond Waddell.
One of nine children, she was born on February 12, 1894 to John Benedict Walling and Johanna Marie Osthoff. The family came to Texas in 1895, settling in the Crescent community in Wharton County. In 1905 the family moved to the Bernardo Community. In 1920 Tillie Walling and Alwin Joseph Struss were united in marriage and made their home in Garwood, Texas. She taught in several schools in the area in the early years and served as a rural mail carrier during World War I. She and A.J. started A.J. Struss Auto Supply in Eagle Lake, Texas in 1936, and she remained very active in the business until her retirement in the mid-1950's.

11. ANNA KATHERINE6 STRUSS
(WILHELM WM.5, JOHANN DIEDERICH CHRISTIAN4, JOHANN GERHARD3, GESCHE MARGARETE2 SOMMER, GESCHE1 JOOST) was born February 23, 1885 in Shaws Bend Colorado Riverbottom, Near Columbus, Texas, and died March 10, 1972 in Columbus, Texas. She married JOHN HUEBEL, JR. March 15, 1909 in Glidden, Texas, son of JOHN HUEBEL and CAROLINA HANTZ. He was born April 15, 1884 in Ellinger, Texas, and died May 10, 1926 in Glidden, Texas.Notes for ANNA KATHERINE STRUSS:
Wm. and Julia Lilie Struss did not waste any time in deciding to have a family once they got married on the 11th day of January in 1884. It was just 13 months later that they celebrated the birth of their first child, Anna Katherine Struss. Annie, as most friends and relatives called her in later life, was a very healthy looking baby when she was born. She was welcomed by one set of grandparents, Friedrich and Friedericke Malsch Lilie.
Julia had just turned the age of 25 years when her first child was born. Wm. had just turned 26 years old. Anna was 24 years old when she asked Wm. and Julia if she could marry this man that was working for the railroad in Columbus, John Huebel, Jr. They gave their consent, and on the 15th of March 1909, Anna Katherine Struss and John Huebel, Jr. were wed in Glidden, Texas.
Annie and John made their home in Glidden, Texas (just outside of Columbus, Texas) for many years while John worked for the railroad. It had been said many times by A.J. Struss, Anna's brother, that he supposed Annie got her recipe and talents from John at "Beer Making". Alwin Struss (AJ) and Tillie Walling reflected on some memories one day and said they were visiting Annie in Glidden when she had to go stir the cooking in the back shed where she was making beer. No sooner did she come back inside when an awful explosion was heard out back. They laughed about it years later, but Annie said it must have had something to do with some new added ingredients she had put in the beer!
Annie was married to John for 17 years when a freak accident on the railroad took his life. John Huebel died on May 10, 1926. However, John and Annie did start a family about four years after they were married. Born on the 18th of March 1912 was their first son, Leon William Huebel. It was seven years later before John and Annie had another child, and this time his name given was after his father, John Huebel. "Little" John later in life got to be known as Hub. Hub was born on the 27th of March, 1919.
After the death of John, Annie never remarried. She moved after several years into Columbus where she lived the remainder of her life. Sidney Struss would spend weekends in Columbus in a spare room while attending Texas A&M University between 1968 and 1972.

Notes for JOHN HUEBEL, JR.:
John Huebel was born on April 15, 1884 in Ellinger, Texas. He was well known throughout his lifetime as one of the best switch foremens and railroad repair men of the railway lines in Colorado County, Texas. However, his life was shortened tragically when a dump car in Glidden, Texas failed to operate properly.
John was 42 years old when the accident occurred taking his life. This was on a Monday afternoon, May 10, 1926 at 5:30 pm. His crew had been unloading some ballast gravel on the east lead track, and when one of the automatic dump cars refused to operate as the air was applied to it, John stepped in between the car track and body to see what was holding it. The car body with its immense load of ballast suddenly swung toward him and pinioned him between the body of the car and the truck frame. The edge of the car struck him in the chest crushing his body to a pulp and breaking both of his arms. He died instantly!
Yard Master J.R. McMahan and Assistant Train Master Weatherford were both present when the accident happened. Doctors from Columbus rushed to the scene, but life was extinct before they reached him. Justice of the Peace E.C. Thrower held an inquest finding that he met his death from accidental causes.
John's funeral services were held at the residence at 4:00 pm on Tuesday afternoon. Reverend E.F. Park of the Catholic Church officiated. The remains were laid to rest in Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Columbus, Texas. One of the largest crowds in recent times attended the obsequies.
John was one of the highest respected citizens of the Glidden area, an old employee of the railroad and popular with all who knew him. At the time of his death he was survived by his father, John Huebel, Sr. of Ellinger, a sister, Mrs. Buxkemper of Slaton, Texas, five brothers Frank and Emil of Ellinger, Henry Huebel of Flatoni, and Willie and Otto Huebel of La Grange, Texas; also, his wife Annie Struss Huebel and his two sons, fourteen and seven years of age.

Burial: February 28, 2003, Lakeside Cemetery, Eagle Lake, Colorado County, Texas
Notes for DOROTHY MAUREEN SLATON:
Dorothy Maureen Slaton was born on December 12, 1923 in Red River Parish just outside of Mansfield, Louisiana. She was the daughter of Sidney Slaton and Ada Caston. Her birthplace still stands today, 2002, located on what is known as "4 mile hill" just outside Mansfield. After Ada sold the home place to one of her daughters, Lexie Leona Slaton who married Eugene Goldsby. After the passing of Eugene and Lexie, the home was left to Jackie Goldsby, son of Lexie and Eugene. He still lives in the home where he and his wife have reared several children.
Dorothy was an average student in Mansfield High School and is so reflected by her graduating in the top half of her graduating class in 1940. Soon after graduating while attending a dance in Eagle Lake, Texas with her brother Prentice Slaton, she met Elmer Alvin Struss. Prentice was an oil field worker and was assigned to drilling wells near Eagle Lake at the time. As a matter of fact, Prentice Slaton was the crew foreman for the first well to be drilled in Shell Oil Company's successful field in Sheridan, Texas. Prentice died just a year after Elmer and Dorothy were married from a heart attack drilling a well just outside of Cleveland, Texas. Elmer and Dorothy's courtship began and as it was evolving, Elmer was assigned to Chicago, Illinois with the Navy. Dorothy Slaton traveled to Chicago with Elmer's parents in the Summer of 1943 where she and Elmer were married on August 28, 1943.
Elmer was attending part of Northwestern University in downtown Chicago where the Northwestern Medical and Legal School is located. This is where the 4-Month Officer Training School was located. Elmer was commissioned on August 20, 1943 while his parents and Dorothy were on their way up to Chicago. On August 28th they were married, only a week after Elmer's commission.
Dorothy and her husband lived in Chicago for the next five months. Dorothy would remain in Chicago while Elmer was out on a new destroyer, a 2100 ton Destroyer called the Cushing.
Dorothy and Elmer would live in Chicago until the middle of 1945 when the school was closed.
Over the years Dorothy would become very addicted to alcohol. She was a very serious alcoholic, much like her father was when she was growing up. The problem got so severe with Dorothy attending AA in Wharton, Texas to getting treatment at Austin, Texas on two different occasions, that Elmer Alvin and her began divorce proceeding in 1964. It was in 1965 that the divorce litigations became final. Dorothy moved to Shreveport and stayed with family. Dorothy's second son, Sidney, would bake a cake for each month that Dorothy would have a clean slate attending AA in Wharton, Texas. The longest Dorothy made it with AA was 12 months as Sidney had baked a cake and placed 12 candles on the cake. Dorothy returned home and had consumed so much alcohol, it was necessary to put her in bed right away. This, of course, broke her son's heart as he was really trying to help. Dorothy apologized for this happening and Sidney tried one more time, but only three months and three candles as Dorothy arrived home in a drunken slumber.
Dorothy was found dead in her apartment in Shreveport, Louisiana on December 14, 1975. She had many bruises on her body in the open casket ceremonies, but none of the family wanted to inquire into how they were received. Darrell, Sidney, and Warren attended the funeral services in Mansfield, Louisiana. Dorothy was laid to rest in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery a few miles outside of Coushatta, Louisiana near the location where her mother Ada Caston was reared in her early childhood.

Burial: December 16, 1974, Bethany Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery
Cause of Death: Liver failure and kidney problems due to excessive drinking
Medical Information: Dorothy, beginning about when she was 30 years old, started drinking excessively. She became an alcoholic and tried to kick the habit by attending AA in Wharton, Texas.

24. SIDNEY ELMER8 STRUSS
(ELMER ALVIN7, ALWIN JOSEPH6, WILHELM WM.5, JOHANN DIEDERICH CHRISTIAN4, JOHANN GERHARD3, GESCHE MARGARETE2 SOMMER, GESCHE1 JOOST) was born March 11, 1950 in Eagle Lake, Colorado County, Texas. He met BARBARA JEAN O'DELL July 24, 1976 in Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas, daughter of MILTON O'DELL and BERTIE SMITH. She was born October 27, 1947 in Austin, Travis County, Texas.Notes for SIDNEY ELMER STRUSS:
Sidney Elmer Struss was born at 9:30 am on March 11, 1950, son of Elmer Alvin Struss and Dorothy Maureen Slaton, in Eagle Lake Community Hospital.
Sidney attended Eagle Lake Elementary and Middle Schools and graduated from Eagle Lake High School in May of 1968. Sidney received a Petroleum Engineering Scholarship from Texas A&M University, but because Darrell was attending, he did not want to have to go and clean his brother's shoes or do pushups and all that other stuff a Freshman does when entering A&M. So, he elected to go to Lamar State College of Technology where he majored in Nuclear Physics. His best friend from high school who was also on the football team with Sidney, Russell Konescheck, also attended and they were dorm roomates for half of 1968 and all of 1969. In 1970 Sidney transferred to Texas A&M University where he finished his education and graduated with a BS in December 1972.
Sidney's brother, Warren William Struss, graduated from Rice High School and attended Texas A&M when Sidney was a Senior. This was the first year of NFL Monday Night Football. As hard as it was for freshman attending college, the temptation of leaving campus and going over to a rent house where Sidney lived off campus on Monday nights and watching football did not help things. However, Warren gained numerous friends as it seemed that every Monday night, more and more of Warren's friends would leave their Freshman dormitories and head over to Sidney's place. It all worked out in the end as Warren successfully completed his degree in Parks and Recreation.
After graduation, Sidney's Uncle Leon Huebel, President of McCullough in Houston, Texas at the time, was able to get Sidney appointed his first job working as a wireline operator for Camco Wireline out of Houma, Louisiana. Sidney lasted only 3 months before he realized this wasn't why he went to school for almost five years. He came back to Houston in the Fall of 1972 and joined Seiscom Delta, a geophysical exploration company. His almost 20+ year career was holding the position of Chief Geophysicist, VP of Geophysics, and winner of numerous technical paper presentations. Projects worked on during the latter part of his career with Dresser Atlas were also submitted and patents were applied and received for downhole geophysical technology advancements.
Sidney won numerous awards before entering college in science and technology. Some of these were, Navy Award, Air Force Award, Army Award, NASA Award, Naval Science Cruiser Award, Grand Award on numerous occassions, and others.
Sidney married Barbara Jean O'Dell on July 24, 1976 in the Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas. Barbara's family is from Austin where her dad, Milton Berford O'Dell was a teacher at Austin High School for many years. He was also the Golf Coach where he coached Milton O'Dell, Jr., his son, Ben Crenshaw, and others to the state championships on several occasions. Sidney met Barbara Jean at the Winchester Club, a country-western dance hall in 1975.
Sidney lived in Bellaire West Community in southwest Houston for about 15 years where he volunteered and participated for several years on the board of directors for the Bellaire West Civic Improvement Association. He was President his last two years on the Board from 1985-1986.
In 1989 Sidney and Barbara feeling the crunch of low oil prices and many of the oil & gas exploration companies laying off thousands of employees, both quit their career jobs and headed to Austin, Texas to begin a new career. Sidney joined Temple-Inland Mortgage Corporation and Barbara joined the Texas Department of Transportation.
Upon arriving in Austin and not finding any companies that could use a good Geophysicist, Sidney did what helped him get through college and that was DJing for a local radio station, KOOL99. He also purchased sound equipment and operated a mobile DJ service called the KOOL99 Oldies Road Show. This has been successful all the way through 2001. Over the years Sidney also did some work on the air and as a mobile DJ for the Kountry Kat radio station and Oldies 103.5 FM who are currently still on the air in 2002.
To this marriage two girls were born, Vanessa Jean Struss and Stephanie Elise Struss.
